Sebago Lake State Park (Round 2)

Sebago Lake State Park (Round 2)

Allow us to reintroduce ourselves; we are the Rubys of ‘Rubys on the Road’. The blog posts will be slowly coming back after about an 18 months hiatus. Did we stop doing what we do? Nope. Did we just run out of free time to write about them? Yup. We aren’t big on social media but we tried to keep that updated with most of our Maine adventures, but finding time to write and publish posts has been on the…

Androscoggin Riverlands State Park

Androscoggin Riverlands State Park

When we got back to the car after a couple hours of snowshoeing around Androscoggin Riverlands State Park, we both seemed quite shocked on how well things went. You see, it was the first time Adeline was in the hiking backpack and we never thought to do a dry run, nor did we have a backup plan if she hated it. All things we did way back when, with Eloise. This time we just took off and the “what ifs”…

Sebago Lake State Park

Sebago Lake State Park

Believe it or not but one of the most gratifying things over this weekend was watching other campers. This park is one of the most visited in the state for its beautiful surroundings and lake setting, yet at times we were people watching like it was a terminal at Logan Airport. First observation, it was about 70% people from Massachusetts, 20% New York and 10% Maine. This could have just been the case in our little cove and by no…

Scarborough Beach State Park

Scarborough Beach State Park

Critics seem to look for the negative in everything. That’s why a review from a normal person seems to speak more to the average person. A review on Yelp or TripAdvisor often carries more weight with us than from a paid professional in an online or printed publication. Even when a critic finally likes something, they still seem to make a dig, here and there. What a terrible way to go about life and experiencing things. With that being said,…

Ferry Beach State Park

Ferry Beach State Park

No, this isn’t the popular Ferry Beach in Scarborough, but the actual state park in Saco. Ferry Beach State Park is our 15th state park visit as a family, and this time we had some friends join us! After looking at the beautiful weather forecasted for that Saturday in early July, it was a last minute, Friday evening decision to head to the beach on Saturday morning. Each of us sent out group texts to family and friends that the…

Range Pond State Park

Range Pond State Park

We had been waiting for the perfect weekend day this winter to visit Range Pond State Park. It seemed that anytime we had a free day to visit a park, it was either freezing rain or just flat-out freezing and we have no interest in exposing a 1-year-old to negative temps for long periods of time. Despite the cold weather, it’s been a wonderful winter so far but there haven’t been any state park visits for our family since Eloise’s birthday. On…

Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park

Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park

There is Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park in South Berwick, and there is Vaughan Woods of Hallowell. Both historic sites, however, two different locations separated by 100 miles via car, not as the crow flies. The location in Hallowell has been on our ‘must visit’ list for a couple years. It’s been nicknamed “Hobbitland” because locals view it as a Shire. The main attraction appears to be an incredible stone walking bridge. This Vaughan Woods is actually closer to our…

Bradbury Mountain State Park

Bradbury Mountain State Park

Raise your hand if you knew Bradbury Mountain State Park had a campground. If you’re raising your hand, you knew more than us. If you didn’t, it’s tucked away in the woods across the street from the park entrance. Until we started researching state parks, we had no idea it existed. Talk about a perfect example of not knowing exactly what’s in your own backyard. Bradbury Mountain State Park is 20 minutes from our house in Portland and like most…

Crescent Beach State Park

Crescent Beach State Park

Crescent Beach State Park has been our go-to spot on a warm summer’s day for many years now, so it was comical to think we had to visit this state park as a family to cross it off our list. We decided to treat it like we have always treated beach days. We watched the weather forecast all week and chose the better of the two weekend days. This is one of the many benefits of living so close to…

Two Lights State Park

Two Lights State Park

We had a free Saturday during the first weekend in June, so we decided to visit another state park. Between lots of travel at the end of May and our first big camping trip in late June, we decided to visit a park in Southern Maine. Due to a rainy weather forecast we decided to visit Two Lights State Park because it is close to our home. On our way to the park, we made a stop at Scratch Bakery…
